Devil in the Countryside is a story about the most famous werewolf investigation in history, brimming with intrigue and war, love and betrayal, and long-kept vendettas.

It's 1588, the height of the Reformation, and a killer is terrorizing the German countryside. There are reports that the legendary Werewolf of Bedburg has returned to a once-peaceful land. Heinrich Franz, a cold and calculating investigator, is tasked with finding whomever -- or whatever -- the killer might be. He'll need all the help he can get, including that of a strange hunter who's recently stumbled into town. Though they're after the same thing, their reasons are worlds apart. And through it all, a priest tries to keep the peace among his frightened townsfolk, while a young woman threatens his most basic beliefs.

In a time when life is cheap and secrets run rampant, these four divergent souls find themselves entwined in a treacherous mystery, navigating the volatile political and religious landscape of 16th century Germany, fighting to keep their sanity -- and their lives.

This is not a genre I read a lot so I was expecting to judge it by the writing not by the subject. However, the subject is well presented and its historical context real and interesting. The mutilations and murders are of course gone into in gory detail, enough for me to be put off because I always think it is homo sapiens’ role not to relish murder, but it seems I am in a minority.
What struck me immediately was a well prepared book devoid of errors showing a young writer with great command of the English language. The book is also well structured and logical, and as scene after scene and chapter after chapter unfold, the reader enjoys expertise. The way in which the inquisitor gets slapped around was also unusual and characteristic of Cory Barclay’s grasp of the period and recreation of unusual slants on characters and actions.
I am always somewhat baffled by the star-system where simple liking seems prioritized. Given werewolves are not my cup of tea, how many stars should I give “Devil In The Coutnryside”? None the less, I think it merits four stars from me and from a horror lover which I am not five!

Devil in the Countryside Of Witches and Werewolves Book 1 edition by Cory Barclay Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Rare for me to give a 5. I also don't normally like Historical Fiction quite so much. This was a very engaging book. Difficult to set down for very long. But alas, I do have a job ...

This chunk of history is a sad period in our European heritage, and it seems fairly presented not to take sides. There are no real obvious exclusively good or bad characters or groups. It is a war, after all, and the victor, should there be one, will rewrite history to suit their marketing position. (in this case while battles were won and lost, ultimately it resulted in an uneasy truce as it played out over the centuries)

The wrap-up could have been skipped. Writing excellently edited. There is a very interesting tidbit of activity in the wrap-up that subtly hints at a different interpretation of events in the book. Very interesting indeed.

The author clearly states there is a probable sequel, and I might have to keep my eyes open for it. I am intrigued by that tidbit.

The werewolf? Certainly you don't believe in actual werewolves in 16th century Europe, do you?
The year is 1588. The small town of Bedburg, Germany has been terrorized by a string of bloody, gruesome murders. A werewolf roams through the German countryside—or is it just a mad killer? Either way, the small German town is plunged into frenzied hysteria, and the land’s authority has appointed Inspector Heinrich Franz to quell it. Yet Franz is ruthless, determined to point his accusatory finger at anyone in order to bolster his reputation. A search for a faceless beast ensues, one that leads to mayhem, travesty, and injustice.

“Devil in the Countryside” by Cory Barclay is an enthralling tale of terror, mystery, and social upheaval. Based upon the famous, real life werewolf mystery that plagued the town of Bedburg, Germany in the late sixteenth-century, the book combines well researched history with spine-tingling, page-turning fiction. Cory Barclay is an exciting new author whose remarkable storytelling abilities are sure to garner attention.

The dubious Inspector Franz sits in the center of a brilliant cast of both fictional and non-fictional characters that are well-drawn and expertly maneuvered for their intended purposes. Among them is hunter, Georg Sieghart, who has a personal vendetta toward this unidentified beast. A farmer, Peter Griswold, attempts to marry off his daughter, Sybil, to a nobleman. Yet Sybil’s heart belongs to man it shouldn’t, a young priest named Dieter Nicolaus.

At the center of the story is the Catholic-Protestant Reformation. Protestants live secretly under the rule of the Catholic Church. Who is responsible for the werewolf rumors, the Catholics, or the Protestants? Are the vicious killings that plague the countryside just a catalyst to spark a raging war that is about to begin? Barclay’s depiction of history is informative, yet cautious, allowing readers to arrive at their own conclusions about the religious upheaval.

The story is action packed to the final page and leaves the reader with an edge-of your-seat, unexpected ending. “Devil in the Countryside” is a must-read thriller, especially for those with a love of history or werewolves. Every reader will be looking forward to Cory Barclay’s second book, sure be another hit.
This is set in a period of history when religion and politics were badly mixed, and culture was undergoing major shocks. In the middle of this, we have a werewolf apparently doing away with individuals in a town. There is an inspector, and a hunter recently returned from war, and enough strange individuals in the town to keep you guessing. As the relationships untangle - or do they? - there are more deaths. Some are by the werewolf and others the result of the inspector's guesswork. The plots gets tangled at the end but there are a couple of characters that held my interest throughout and I'm still not sure about the ending. But well worth the read.
Historical fiction is usually not my genre but when I heard this was about a real-life werewolf investigation I was hooked. I knew of the Salem witch trials in the U.S. but had no idea that during the same period in Europe they were out hunting werewolves.

The story begins in a small German town during the Protestant-Catholic reformations. A woman is found murdered and a smart, ruthless detective sets out to find her killer. As the body count grows, you are soon thoroughly immersed in 16th Century Europe with all its brutality, religious conflict, power and poverty, good versus evil. The perfect backdrop for a great murder mystery and love story.

I found myself savoring this book, taking my time with a memorable cast of characters, solid plot, authentic dialogue – and even learning a little history on the side. I got so involved in the story and time period, I didn't want it to end! But in the Afterword the author mentions a sequel, so I'll definitely be back for more.
