Executive presence can be an elusive and somewhat frustrating concept. This brief handbook attempts to cut through the babble. Expanding on the social science insights from Compelling People The Hidden Qualities That Make Us Influential (required reading at Harvard Business School), Matthew Kohut offers a framework for understanding how others perceive your presence in a professional context as well as practical tips for developing new skills. Rather than providing a one-size-fits-all model, it identifies the choices you can make about how to present yourself in a way that is genuine and authentic while meeting the expectations for executives in your organization's culture.
Executive Presence The Inner Game eBook Matthew Kohut
I bought this book because I'd already read a different one by this author ("Compelling People") and found it quite valuable, both in terms of helping those whom I supervise improve their presentation skills and enhancing my own. I was particularly interested in finding out what kind of guidance he would offer in a more focused format. In "Executive Presence," Kohut delivers a crisp overview of the concept and then spends the rest of the text providing simple, actionable suggestions for how--and why--to cultivate and maintain it. The clarity of detail and rich variety of real-life examples make it easy to grasp what he's saying and to understand why his points are important to consider. So while the book is relatively brief, it certainly isn't superficial. I'm excited to share it with others who are interested in enhancing how they are perceived--and how they perform--in the workplace. Like his previous work, this book is a welcome combination of valuable information that's a pleasure to read.Product details

Executive Presence The Inner Game eBook Matthew Kohut Reviews
As a soon-to-be college grad, I've been doing a ton of research to get prepared for the corporate world. I stumbled upon this, and I'm glad I did! It's a quick read and has a ton of tips that are applicable to everyone, not just executives. Kohut gives some great insight into how to present yourself, which I think will be especially helpful in interviews with hiring managers. Whether you're applying to internships or full-time jobs, college students should read this!!
Concise content and clear guidelines that one can follow. Not burdened with esoteric explanations.
Straight forward message about executive presence. Most important, addresses the emotional and self-aware aspect of living the executive presence. An excellent reading and informative book.
This book is very concise way to articulate some very important concepts in executive presence. The topics are not covered in depth and there are few recommendations on how to improve - only what the elements of executive presence are and which ones are not (e.g. Use of 'uh' or 'um', crossing arms, or appearing nervous when challenged).
I found it really helpful as a framework to think about executive presence and as a starting point in areas where I need more help.
The author does an excellent job of putting forth a common sense framework for understanding executive presence. He offers practical tips for adopting new behaviors and modifying poor ones, and yet the information here is much more descriptive than prescriptive. I've streamed Mr. Kohut's recent Ted Talk and read his previous work, Compelling People, and once again, he cuts through the babble, forgoes the fortune-cookie proverbs, and gets to the inner core of his subject matter with a commanding presence all his own.
